Newsletter: August 2011

Dear Supporters,

Since the last newsletter in May, the numbers we are having to turn away due to lack of beds remains the same, between 20 and 50 per month. We have a very real fear that these numbers can only increase as economic cuts bite still further. It really is only a drop in the ocean but we are currently looking for office premises so we can move Administration out of Mary Cole House and use those three/four rooms for extra bed spaces.

After a three month trial we have closed our 'Night Safe' Project which may sound at odds with the statement above, but unfortunately we only have a finite amount of money to spread round. The day time drop-in in the Irene Kennedy Centre is growing at a rate of knots, with 60 individuals a month accessing it for help, advice, training, visits etc. We have increased the number of activities, such as an 8 week cookery course provided by Merseyside Fire Service, a days fishing, walking up Moel Fammmau, and also have an advisor from the Councils Housing Options Team coming in every Wednesday to give housing advice. Last week we took a group on a sailing 'taster' day at West Kirby and this week a group have gone to make candles! We constantly look for activities to increase social skills and self confidence.

Today we had some fantastic news in that one of our Volunteers, George O'Donnell (Pictured) was last night awarded Wirral 'Volunteer of the year'.

George thoroughly deserves this award having started off as a resident of Mary Cole House, then Arkangel and now in his own tenancy. Since then George has volunteered tirelessly for us and recently took over the Peer Mentor project. Sincere congratulations from us all!

This week we had a visit form the MP for Wirral South, Alison McGovern. It was great to see her, and to show her round the project we are so proud of. If anyone would like to come and visit Mary Cole House, or the Arkangel move-on project, then you would be most welcome at any time. If any groups wish to come round then please contact me and we will arrange a convenient date and time.

As usual, we are looking for more volunteers to help out with a variety of tasks round the hostel and Arkangel. If anyone is interested then please contact Joyce Lowe our volunteer coordinator.

Many thanks to all who support us, either through thought or deed, we are ever grateful to you. Particularly this month to Cooperative Funeral Care for their generous contributions through their '1000 Kisses' campaign.

Sincerely,

Anne O'Marah
Chief Executive
