When did we start?
We opened our first shelter in January 1992 in an usused church. For 6 years we were winter opening only.
Where are we?
In Sandford Street, which is off Cleveland Street, near Hamilton Square, Birkenhead. Our lottery funded building, Mary Cole House, sleeps 25 in comfort, privacy and dignity.
Notable feature are:
Kitchens equipped to catering standards.
A semi-independant living area, for 4 residents with thier own lounge, kitchen and bathroom.
What additional services do we provide?
Arkangel, our supported housing consists of six two bedroom houses which are situated in the Birkenhead and Wallasey areas of Wirral.
We have a team of keyworkers and support staff who help residents to address the issues that underpin their homelessness, and then assist them to move on towards independent living.
We have excellent links with drug and alcohol agencies. Nursing staff, and a mental health nurse provide a regular surgery.
We also have links with providers of training and therapeutic services.
How do we staff our service?
There is always a minimum of two paid support staff on duty at all times, 24 hours per day, every day of the year.
We also have 70 volunteers who work shifts doing a range of jobs including cooking, befriending, and staffing the reception desk.
