Volunteering

The Ark depends greatly on its 50+ volunteers. Many Volunteers come in to help cook for one of the three meals a day we serve, other volunteers 'befriend', which is listening to, and supporting, those residents who want to talk about themselves and their problems.

Volunteers also staff our reception which is often the first point of contact for residents and visitors.

Church and Community Groups

For Church and Community groups we can provide talks, information sessions and workshops. We can also offer you training in matters related to homelessness and offer expert guidance and advice on homeless issues. We do not charge you for this service, but are always grateful for any donation you may wish to make towards our present and future work.

Individual companies and organisations

No matter how large or small your company or organisation, we can offer training on homelessness and issues surrounding it. We are continually running our own staff and volunteer training sessions and these are available to small groups and individuals. We will offer bespoke training related to homeless matters to large organisations.

Training can be offered in the following areas:

Equality and Diversity:
At the end of this session, attendees will will have a sound understanding of the 2010 Equality Act, the nine protected characteristics, key terms, and related to Equality and Diversity, personal and organisational responsibility, why Equality and Diversity matter, and the consequences of bad practise. Potential challenges at work and how to deal with them will also be covered.

Understanding homelessness and its causes:
At the end of this session, attendees will have an understanding of the causes of urban modern homelessness and the solutions.

Managing aggression and conflict:
At the end of this session, attendees will have a basic understanding of the causes of aggression and conflict and how to reduce the associated risk. Students will also be equipped with some basic techniques for diffusing aggressive situations and be taught how to extract themselves from a dangerous situation.

Safeguarding vulnerable adults:
After this session attendees will have a clear understanding of what constitutes abuse, how to protect vulnerable adults from abuse, how to report concerns related to abuse, how to whistle blow, and how to protect self from accusations of abuse.

Drugs and the Law within a supported environment:
After this session, individuals will have an understanding of how to manage, within the law, the use of illegal and legal drugs within a hostel or housing setting.

All our training prices are competitive and negotiable.
