ResidentsResidents frequently have a drug, alcohol or mental health problem. For those interested in figures, see the resident's statistics archive pages where we have figures from 2003 to present, showing age, length of stay, and problems residents have. Key workers support residents to attain their goal which is often obtaining their own independent accommodation. |
Mary Cole HouseAccess is simple - new residents come to our front door or are referred by other accommodation providers or other agencies such as the Council, Probation, The Alcohol Service etc.We take anyone over the age of 25, no upper age limit, who is willing to work with us and abide by simple and necessary rules. Each application is considered individually and residents are accepted pre-interview into the hostel when we have a vacancy. Residents can now come and go as they please 24 hours a day with a key fob system. Key workers support residents to attain their goal which is addressing whatever issues they may have and often obtaining their own independent accommodation. Each new resident is assigned their own key worker. |

Staff And VolunteersThe Ark currently employs 26 staff across both the Ark and the Arkangel Supported Housing Project. We also have approximately 50 volunteers who help in a variety of ways such as cooking, befriending, and staffing the reception desk. See Volunteering at The Ark for more information. The Ark is staffed by a minimum of two staff 24 hours a day, so help and assistance is always available. |
The BuildingMary Cole House (named after one of the founding members) is a purpose built, direct access homeless hostel which opened in 2001.It is located in Sandford Street, near Hamilton Square, Birkenhead and is a short walk from Hamilton Square Station, the Town Centre and the Bus station. At the rear of the building is The Irene Kennedy Centre. Men are accommodated in 21 individual bedrooms and women have their own section of the hostel, the Barclay Suite, which has 4 bedrooms, a bathroom and small kitchenette. There is a comfortable communal lounge, dining room, and outdoor smoking area (the hostel is completely non-smoking). Staff are on duty 24 hours a day so there are offices and staff areas within the building. The day to day costs are covered by a combination of statutory funding and voluntary donations. |
